Protecting Yourself From Identity Theft

Did you know that according to one trusted study, it can take 5,840 hours to correct the damage from id theft? That’s the equivalent of working a full-time job for two years. Taking a few steps can keep criminals from stealing your information.

Protecting your mail with a locked mailbox or post office box will prevent thieves from grabbing pre-approved credit applications or bank statements. When going out, take any identifiers that you won’t need out of your wallet – including your social security number and extra credit cards. Cancel any credit cards you haven’t used in the last six months, since open credit is an easy target. And be sure to regularly monitor your bank statements, credit card statements and annual credit reports for any suspicious activity. Remember, prevention now can save you major headaches later.
